Irving states, “Just as Dizzy Gillespie mentored Miles Davis, Miles mentored me and I am obligated to mentor the next generations of great artists, and have done so for the past twenty years. The Jazz Institute has provided me and the young musicians a container in which to facilitate this exchange of artist knowledge.” Irving also does workshops for area school music/arts teachers to bring new techniques and methodologies for them to take back to their students.
